The journey from GIS to Digital Twin

The journey from traditional GIS to Digital Twin

By Rob Leenderts

A Geographic Information System (GIS), allows you to use a digital map to visualise your fibre network. You can plan and document how trenches, ducts, fibre cables, optics, cabinets and nodes are located on a map, and this provides you with a general overview. Nevertheless, a traditional GIS is somewhat limited. You can take the data of your fibre network many steps further, and add a dynamic perspective by creating a Digital Twin. This Digital Twin enables you to identify your assets – not only where they are, but what they are, how they are connected and who is using them.

The fibre network roll-out

Let us first establish how a traditional roll-out for fibre networks is usually set up, where each step is most often silo-based. With the traditional approach to plan, design, build, deploy and operate the fibre network, different people, sometimes from different companies, use different methods. Thus, data is exchanged between different instances and systems. Every time data is exchanged, there are risks of quality reduction and errors. These are costly and time-consuming to repair. In many ways, it is an inefficient way to work.

Let us then look at the advantages of using one software system, avoiding the risks involved with the traditional approach. With all your data collated in one software system, you can create a virtual representation of your fibre network – a Digital Twin. The Digital Twin serves as a real-time representation of your data. It provides an overview of your assets, as in tracking where and what they are, how they are connected, as well as who is using them. It enables you to plan, design, build, deploy and operate in a dynamic and efficient manner. Quality is ensured and errors are prevented. With dpCom, a software system designed for telecoms, this is possible.

With dpCom, the process required for a fibre network is visualised as a Digital Twin, which is available for various clients.

A successful history of fibre network roll-out

At Digpro, we have extensive experience in the telecom market. We have been an instrumental part of the Swedish fibre market for over 20 years. This market is well developed, with a 95 percent penetration of 1GB per household connectivity. Operators demand broad functionality and quality from software systems. For investors, an accurate Digital Twin is vital. It enhances the quality in a number of areas, such as the:

  • efficiency of the operators
  • service to the customers
  • profits of the networks
  • value of the networks

An efficient and sustainable fibre business

Over half of the Swedish operators use dpCom to manage the lifecycle of their fibre networks.

With over 30 years’ experience, Digpro has been an integral part of making Sweden one of the most advanced fibre markets in the world.

To enhance the productivity of your fibre network, dpCom allows you to collate and secure all your data into one system. You can create a Digital Twin of your fibre network. Thus, you limit the data to one space, and take full control of both the data and the process. You keep track of everything, since you plan, design, build, deploy and operate your fibre network in the same system. One database. One process. One standard. This is how to build an efficient and sustainable fibre business.
