Digpro's history

Reflecting on our journey from a small shop on Sigtunagatan in 1989 to becoming a Nordic market leader, Digpro has consistently empowered network owners and operators worldwide with innovative solutions.

1989

Digpro was founded

Bo Lundgren and his wife Lena founded Digpro in a small shop at Sigtunagatan 14 in Stockholm. At the time, Bo was working for the American company Intergraph Corporation but started Digpro AB as a side venture to take on various programming and digitization projects.

The first assignment was for Stockholm Gas, digitizing the entire gasworks area, including electricity, telecommunications, and water utilities. During this first year, Digpro secured additional projects, including a programming assignment for Ericsson and digitizing the electrical schematics for Stockholms Energi.

In larger scale

The business is now operating on a larger scale alongside co-owner Per Westberg, who also works at Intergraph Corporation.

The focus remains twofold: carrying out digitization projects and developing standard applications for network information management based on Intergraph’s development platform.

The first assignments are carried out for electricity distribution companies and municipalities in southern and central Sweden. In connection with the first project for Jönköping’s Gatukontor, Digpro hires its first full-time employee.

Digpro’s leadership takes shape

Svante Mjörne joins as a co-owner and plays a significant role in shaping Digpro’s development and product portfolio until September 2019.

The Polish company Geomar SA visits Digpro for a study tour and a demonstration of Intergraph’s development platform in an effort to secure ENEA in Poland as a client. ENEA ultimately chooses Geomar’s solution, which is built on Intergraph’s platform. This initial meeting between Geomar and Digpro lays the foundation for what is today Digpro Poland.

Collaboration with Kraftdata begins

Digpro’s products, including those for the electricity distribution market, are acquired by the company Kraftdata, alongside the signing of a long-term collaboration agreement. At this point, Digpro has around 25 employees.

Most of the Digpro employees working with these products accept continued employment with Kraftdata as part of the acquisition. Around the same time, ABB Power Technologies buys out the remaining shareholders in Kraftdata, making it a wholly owned subsidiary of ABB.

The six remaining Digpro employees continue working within the market segments not included in the acquisition, largely operating under the framework of the new collaboration agreement with ABB Power Technologies. As business in other segments begins to grow, Digpro gradually starts recruiting new employees.

dpSpatial platform takes shape

Before the turn of the millennium, Oracle introduced an enhanced database concept, Oracle Spatial, at a conference in Switzerland attended by Bo Lundgren. The concept proved to offer significantly improved functionality for storing and managing geographic and location-based information. Digpro quickly recognized the opportunities this innovation presented.

Several thesis projects were initiated in this area by, among others, Fredrik Widlert and Linnea Löfstedt. The technology performed well and, even 20 years later, remains the core of the dpSpatial platform.

The solution integrates advanced technology with Oracle Spatial databases to store, analyze, and visualize geographic data. A few pilot projects based on this new technology were carried out, including one for the City of Stockholm.

E.ON and the new web-based platform

ABB Power Technologies was working on a proposal for a new technical platform for E.ON Elnät. After evaluating various technical solutions, E.ON Elnät ultimately chose a system based on Digpro’s new web-based platform—an offering unmatched by any other solution. E.ON became one of Digpro’s most significant clients over the years, as the collaboration drove the entire platform development, transitioning from a small user base to a significantly larger one.

With E.ON as a reference client, interest in the new platform grew, and Digpro initiated a project with the IT infrastructure company Stokab.

Digpro then acquired the company IT-Geograferna, which had already been working in Digpro’s offices for some time. This acquisition brought in seven employees as well as the widely used and popular viewer product, Kartago. The integration of both personnel and the product portfolio went smoothly.

Stokab – the first customer in the Telecom sector

Digpro relocates to larger offices at Fridhemsplan in Stockholm. At the same time, employees from its closest partner, ABB Power Technologies, move in with Digpro. Over the years, a strong collaboration has developed, and the benefits of sharing office space have become increasingly evident.

After a period of working together with Stokab, Digpro has the opportunity to take over four employees from Stokab’s development department. The project with Stokab continues, and the first version of dpCom begins to take shape. Stokab thus becomes the first customer in the telecommunications sector to commit to the new platform.

The office in 2003 was centrally located at Fridhemsplan in Stockholm.

Reorganization and more Telecom customers

A major reorganization is carried out, and Digpro is divided into two divisions: “Product Projects” and “Customer Projects.” Two smaller groups, “Administration/Marketing” and a staff unit, are also created. The two main divisions now consist of approximately 15 employees each. A management team is appointed to oversee daily operations through regular management meetings.

During the year, Digpro gains two additional customers in the telecom sector, marking an important milestone for the dpCom product.

Digpro takes over ABB Power Technologies’ operations

At the turn of the year, Digpro takes over personnel from ABB Power Technologies, consisting of approximately 15 employees. At the same time, a new collaboration agreement is signed with ABB. As part of the deal, customers and ongoing projects are also transferred to Digpro. The integration proceeds smoothly, as the collaboration has been evolving over a long period.

With the acquisition of ABB Power Technologies’ operations, Digpro gains valuable technical expertise and extensive industry knowledge. Product ownership becomes more clearly defined, the customer base expands, and the combined workforce is better positioned to work toward common goals. The merger is well received by both customers and employees.

The collaboration with ABB also leads to the establishment of a market among electricity distribution companies across Sweden and the delivery of dpPower to customers in Ghana, Mozambique, Poland, and India.

As Digpro continues to grow, the company moves to a larger, newly built office at Ulriksborgsgatan 5 in Stadshagen, Stockholm. This location remains Digpro’s headquarters to this day.

Digpro has operated from eight different offices over the years, all centrally located in Stockholm, except for one in Sollentuna.

Norway – a new key market

In recent years, Digpro has experienced great success in the Norwegian market. In 2022, a major event was held where an agreement was signed with Nettalliansen, an association of 25 small to medium-sized electricity distribution companies in Norway. They selected dpPower as their Network Information System (NIS) to provide all 25 companies with an advanced technical platform for their electricity distribution.

As part of our expansion in Norway with Nettalliansen and other new customers such as Elvenett AS and Midtnett AS, we established a dedicated team in Norway, led by Frode Gundersen. The solutions are fully tailored to the needs of the Norwegian market. With dpPower, all electricity distribution companies within the agreement benefit from the same digital solutions for documentation, operations, project management, design, maintenance, network calculations, and network analysis.

Digpro Group acquires Evado

In May 2024, Digpro acquired the company Evado. Their development of mobile applications and digital technology for energy companies and municipal organizations is a valuable addition to Digpro’s portfolio. Evado’s solutions will be integrated into Digpro’s Network Information System (NIS) while also continuing to be offered as standalone products.

This acquisition marks another step in Digpro’s strong growth, both in Sweden and internationally, and represents a key milestone in accelerating the energy transition towards a more sustainable future.
