Pipelines are considered to be critical infrastructure, and are therefore subject to special inspection requirements. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) in remote sensing, can reduce cost, streamline and improve the quality of the inspections. Existing systems are able to record and display material with different sensors, but the complex evaluations have until now only been carried out by trained staff.
A research project within the German Mobility with Artificial Intelligence (MOWAI) network for the development of an intelligent inspection system for flight operations has been initiated. Four partners, AeroDCS GmbH, Spleenlab GmbH, HITeC eV and Digpro, are working together in this project.
Matjaz Clemente, Product Solution Manager at Digpro, is delighted to be part of the project: “The aiSpecTo is an interesting research and development project. The goal is to use the UAV equipped with state-of-the-art sensors and artificial intelligence to inspect the critical utility assets such as gas pipelines. Automatic inspections will improve the quality of the inspections and reduce cost. Even more importantly, automatic inspections will reduce time to identify critical conditions, like rust, on the infrastructure. Digpro will provide the network information and asset maintenance system that supports the automatic inspections, and related network maintenance work process.”
